Once your braces have been fitted by our specialist orthodontist, you will need to take good care of them to help ensure you get the best result from treatment.
After your braces have been fitted, you will experience general tenderness of your teeth and mouth. This tenderness usually subsides within 7-10 days. To help ease this, we recommend:
Some of the best foods to eat while your teeth are tender:
You can still eat lots of fruit and vegetables, but for food like raw carrots, apples and corn on the cob, cut it up into bite size pieces so you can enjoy it without damaging your braces.
Hard and sticky foods will break or loosen your braces. Please be careful at all times when eating.
Nuts | Bubble Gum |
Popcorn | Sticky Chocolate bars |
Pork Crackling | Roll Ups |
Hard Biscuits | Red Skin/Mints |
Corn Chips | Toffee |
Ice | Lolly Pops |
Crusts (pizza, pie) | Avoid chewing on pens, pencils and fingernails too as these can knock the brackets off your teeth. |
If you play full contact sports, such as football or hockey, you will need to wear a mouthguard. Custom made mouthguards can be made in our practice or with your preferred dental technician to ensure your teeth have proper protection.
Please be aware that your mouthguard will need remolding regularly. This is because your teeth continuously move during treatment. Bring your mouthguard into each appointment so we can check if it needs to be remolded. There is no charge for this.
